The Thai Poosam was celebrated from Friday, 7th Feb 2020 till Sunday, 9th Feb 2020.

The word Thaipusam is a combination of the name of the month, Thai (January), and the name of a star, Pusam. This particular star is at its highest point during the festival. The festival commemorates the occasion when Goddess Parvati gave Load Murugan a Vel “spear” so he could vanquish the evil demon Soorapadman.

It is believed that carrying பால் குடம் (Milk Pot) on “THAIPUSAM” day and doing “Vel Abishekam” is one of the most sacred and powerful way of thanking Lord Muruga and praying for betterment.

Mangala Porutkal Yelam

Mangala Porutkal Yelam (Auctioning of Blessed Gifts) is a tradition carried out during Thai Pusam where devotees can buy a blessed gift of their choice from the auction based on the wish they would like to get from Lord Murugan. It is believed that when a devotee prays to Lord Murugan and wishes for something and buys a corresponding blessed gift from the auction, their wish will come true. Similarly devotees who have attained their wishes with the blessings of Lord Murugan can offer these gifts for the auction as a way to pay it forward.
